Well, history states that it was a battle that the Mexican people won against the French, but it is a symbol to the Mexican people of freedom, which they had gained from the Spaniards that conquered Mexico, or known as Tenochtitlan, at the time of the Spanish conquest. Freedom for the Mexican, or any people, is something that feels so great, and I truly mean this for one. I am a prisoner. I was watching the movie King Kong, one of the newer remade versions. I don’t know if y’all or any has ever seen this movie, but there is a scene where King Kong has chains on him, and he is breaking out of them. So I told other prisoners while I was in the day room for recreation, that is how I feel sometimes, like I want to break out of these chains, exactly how King Kong was screaming and pulling at the chains, trying to break free.
So when the French came to Mexico trying to take our freedom and conquer our lands, how would you feel, honestly, if people came and tried to take your land, enslave your people, and just put chains on your people? So the Mexican people fought for their freedom, their land, their loved ones, and beat the French, which they thought was going to be easy. So Cinco de Mayo is a triumph of a battle, but more importantly, the Mexican people kept their freedom and independence of Mexico, so we all celebrate this day with joy and happiness for all Mexican people and our freedom….
